The score formula

For a valid word, the game calculates:

word length × word length × 10

A three-letter word scores 3 × 3 × 10, or 90 points. A four-letter word scores 160. A five-letter word scores 250. A six-letter word scores 360. The extra letter does more than add a fixed amount because the length is squared.

Two separate three-letter words are worth 180 points. One valid six-letter word is worth 360 points. That does not mean every short word is a mistake. Validity comes before length

The formula only applies after the selected sequence is accepted as a word by the game’s built-in word list. A path shorter than three letters clears without earning points, and an unrecognized sequence is marked as invalid before the selection clears. Do not chase a long-looking string just because it reaches across the board; the letters must be connected under the path rules and form an accepted word.

That creates a useful order of questions:

  1. Can I trace this sequence through adjacent occupied tiles?
  2. Is it a word I expect the game’s common-word list to recognize?
  3. Is there a longer extension that stays connected and does not reuse a tile?
  4. Does waiting for that extension leave the rising grid too crowded?

The first two questions protect the move. The last two decide whether the higher-value path is worth pursuing.

Look for extensions, not only isolated words

When you see a likely three-letter word, pause briefly before submitting it. Check the tiles next to its first and last letters, including diagonals. Perhaps a path that reads “rate” can continue to “rated,” or a three-letter start can gain a fourth letter through a diagonal. Do not force an extension that breaks adjacency or repeats a cell, but do give the endpoints a quick scan.

A useful habit is to trace the word mentally in order, then inspect neighboring tiles only from the current endpoint. This is faster than scanning the entire board for every possible branch. If no sensible extension appears, submit the valid word and use the cleared space.

Score against board pressure

The first letter you select starts the row-drop timer. New rows rise on a regular interval after that, so a long search is not free. If the upper rows are crowded or the board has few open routes, a confirmed three- or four-letter word can be the better decision. It earns points, collapses its columns, and returns the board to a more readable shape.

When the board is open, take more time to inspect extensions. When the grid is close to the top, favor a reliable clear that removes letters now. Scoring and survival are connected: a large word is useful only if the grid stays playable long enough to submit it.

Clearing changes the next opportunity

After a valid submission, selected letters disappear and the remaining letters collapse downward within their columns. This can create new adjacent pairs that were not side by side before. A shorter word may therefore be valuable if it pulls a column into a better shape for the next path. Conversely, a long word that crosses several columns can reset a crowded area all at once.

There is no single length to prefer on every board. The formula tells you the reward, while the post-clear board tells you whether the choice also improves your next turn.

Use the formula as a quick decision aid

You do not need to calculate every option perfectly. Remember the checkpoints: 90 for three letters, 160 for four, 250 for five, and 360 for six. If two routes are equally safe, choose the longer valid one. If a short route prevents the top row from filling, take the immediate clear.
