Four in a Row Guide: Columns, Threats, and Double Wins

Four in a Row is the classic column-dropping game, built here for two people sharing one device. Choose a column and your disc falls to the lowest empty cell in it. The first player to line up four discs — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins; if the board fills with no line, the game is a draw. The player who opens each game alternates.
Play the standard 7×6 board or the quicker 6×5 board, which opens up faster and punishes slow play.
How to play
Pick a column; the disc lands on the lowest empty cell in that column — you cannot place higher, and a full column is not a legal move. After each drop the handoff screen covers the board and offers the device to the other player, so the next move is made by the other person, not the one who just dropped.
Controls
- Mouse or touch: choose a column button above the board.
- Keyboard: move between columns with the left and right arrow keys and press Enter to drop.
- Pass the device: the handoff screen appears after every drop; Continue passes play on.
- Board size: switch between 7×6 · standard and 6×5 · small at any time.
The drop animation turns itself off for reduced-motion players.
Reading the board
The classic mistake: building on a cell your opponent owns
A horizontal or diagonal line of three is only a threat if the winning cell is one you can actually reach. The most common blunder is dropping directly under your opponent’s open three — their disc lands on the winning cell, and your move made the loss legal. Before dropping, check what the cell above your disc lets your opponent complete.
Create two winning cells at once
A double threat — a move that opens two different four-in-a-row cells at once — cannot be stopped, because one block covers only one. You don’t need to see the whole game ahead; you need one move that leaves your opponent two places to guard and only one turn.
Hold the center
On the 7×6 board the middle column participates in the most lines, so early discs there stay useful longer; the two columns either side come next. Edges are safe for your discs but give you fewer ways to win, and the very edge columns mostly build verticals — useful, but narrow.
